Specifications for Omega3 vary from one network to another. This page has a set of minimum and recommended specifications for Omega3.

Minimum specs:

The Network:

  • TCP/IP Network. Not IPX, NetBEUI or Appletalk.
  • Windows NT4.0 or Better workstations. (Omega can not monitor Windows 95 or 3.11)
  • Switches or Hubs preferably managed with an IP Address
  • Switches, Hubs and networking equipment that supports the SNMP protocol
  • Network Attached Applications/Devices that support SNMP (including Print Servers, NAS etc)

The Omega3 Server:

A dedicated server is recommended, however Omega3 can be run on servers with other applications. Alpha Systems can not be held responsible for any conflicts between Omega3 and other applications on the same server.

  • Windows NT 4.0 Server with SP6 minimum. Omega3 can not be run on 95/98/ME computers. A linux/unix configuration is possible, but Windows is preferred.
  • 128mb RAM.
  • 4gb Hard Disk space free for Installation.
  • One 10mbps network card minimum.
  • 500Mhz Processor.
  • For best readings, network attachment to the core network hub/switch.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or better on the server and on any workstations that will access Omega3.

Recommended specs:

The Network:

  • TCP/IP Network with IPv4.
  • Windows 2000/XP/2003 Servers/Workstations.
  • Managed Layer 3 Switches.

The Omega3 Server:

  • Windows 2000 Server with SP3.
  • 256mb RAM.
  • 4gb Hard Disk space free for Installation
  • Two 100mbps network cards, one for general network attachment, the other for SNMP data only, connected to the core network switch/hub.
  • 800Mhz Processor.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 on the server and on any workstations that will access Omega3.

Notes:

Omega3 will open up port TCP/80 on the server to serve the web-based component of the application to the rest of the network. The only other data Omega3 will send and receive will be SNMP and Pings. Administration can be done from the web based area, with some administration needed from the server console.

PC Anywhere / Terminal Services or a similar application is recommended for complete 'Lights Out' operation of Omega3.

The application is installed as a Windows service, so the server can be completely self-recovering and can run for extended periods of time without user intervention.

Backups may be required of the data folder where Omega graphs are stored and updated to avoid loosing historical information.
