| Two of the things I love
best are Lighting Design and Computer Networking. Completely different
things that don't go together in any way shape or form. One is a
science, the other is an art. One would probably end up in a desk job,
the other is a dynamic, practical thing with many different tasks.
I at one point, I was perusing both
as a career, but I soon realized I couldn't carry on perusing both of
them through degree level... because you just can't so I chose
lighting design.
I am interested in computer
networking in a very practical way. I like plugging in equipment,
configuring it, designing computer networks, etc. In today's world
though, the actual physical work only accounts for about 10% of
computer networking. Documentation has come down very heavily on
companies, so you spend about 90% of the time documenting work, going
through SOP's, and so on. This completely takes the 'fun' away from
me. I couldn't do a 9-5 job, every day of every week, year in, year
out, sitting at a desk documenting things. It would probably drive me
nuts.
This is the one thing Lighting Design
has over Computer Networking. It is an art form, with more design work
and practical work than documentation. Whilst documentation is rapidly
coming down on Lighting Design because of the size of the projects,
and factors like health and safety, the balance is still right, making
Lighting Design a very dynamic job.
In Lighting Design, I particularly
like and have an interest in Live Concerts, Trade Events,
Environmental Lighting, anything with a musical involvement, Dance,
Musicals, etc.
This is my thinking behind things,
this is why I am doing Lighting Design instead of Computer Networking.
In the real world however, I see no reason why I can't do both, so I
will if I can.
